A Higher Resolution

“You can avoid reality, but you can’t avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.” Ayn Rand

In his Fall of Civilizations podcast, writer and producer Paul Cooper takes the listener through the historical events leading up to the last days of the world’s great civilizations. Focusing especially upon the lives of the people who were there and particularly on how they understood what was happening around them. After listening I couldn’t help but ask myself,  how much do people today really know and understand about our world and the events that are taking place in our time?

Although we can now see anywhere in the world in real time, it seems we have never been less willing to agree on what it is we all see. We may be looking at the same thing, but are clearly looking at it through different optics. That means many of us are using lenses that either can’t or won’t deliver sharp, clearly defined truth. These low resolution views are everywhere in our culture, and are passing into the unfiltered bloodstream of our consciousness.

Most people didn’t choose the lens they use to see the world,  it was given to them. Few ever question whether it works properly by checking to make sure the things they are seeing actually exist and are real.  The pressure to see what our tribe sees has never been greater. Being willing to recognize and stand on the often controversial and unpopular truths of our time requires clarity and courage. A Higher Resolution Podcast is dedicated to providing both.

Why The Mandelbrot Set?

Benoit Mandelbrot was trying to find a way to measure the “roughness” in nature i.e. trees, mountains, coastlines, when he discovered what has come to be known as the Mandelbrot set.  A puzzling microcosm where the abstractions of art and mathematics seemingly coexist outside of human interference. The IBM mathematician could hardly have anticipated the impact that the field of fractal geometry, a derivative of his remarkable discovery, would have on the world. Everything from chaos theory to weather forecasting would come forth from this new way of thinking about and describing the natural world. And yet this great achievement may only be the low resolution tip of an even greater iceberg.

The Mandelbrot Set is an enigma that challenges our current understanding and contemporary narrative, by offering a tantalizing glimpse into another reality. Our world appears to be considerably more mysterious than enlightened thinkers might once have imagined. The rationalist framework we have used to interpret reality now seems inadequate.  To proceed we will need an open mind, a humble heart and probably a new tool or two. Most importantly however we need a better way to understand what we are looking at.

We need A Higher Resolution.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING WE CAN EXPERIENCE IS THE MYSTERIOUS. IT IS THE SOURCE OF ALL TRUE ART AND SCIENCE.       Albert Einstein
